Worship Through Songs

Good day precious flock of the Lord, beloved children of God. May this day find you resting secured and filled with the peace that surpasses all human understanding.

The first question of the Heidelberg Catechism, a summary of Protestant Christian doctrines used for teaching, asks, “What is your only comfort in life and death?” The summarized Biblical answer is as follows…

That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul,
both in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.
He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood,
and has set me free from all the power of the devil.

He also preserves me in such a way that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head;
indeed, all things must work together for my salvation.

Therefore, by his Holy Spirit he also assures me of eternal life
and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for him.

Friends, are we living in the reality of these truths? Do we truly find our only comfort in life and in death, in Jesus Christ our Lord? Is our hope anchored in him alone? Is our trust leaning solely on his finished work and unchanging character? Is our confidence grounded in the Word of the One whose name is Faithful and True? Do we find overwhelming delight and tremendous comfort in knowing that God, who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up as an atonement for our sins, is in fact looking out for our highest good—both in this life and the next?

Brothers and Sisters in Christ let us pause and soak in the reality of these things, as we remind ourselves once again of what our God is like. Let us, in the name of Jesus, draw near once more to the throne of our King and find our rest in the presence of our Heavenly Father. Let us again taste and see that the Lord is indeed good and that those who trust in him are truly blessed. For He hears our cries and calms our fears. He lifts us up from despair and crowns us with love and compassion. And amid every circumstance, good or bad, He generously gives sufficient grace, supernatural peace, and never-failing love. Our God is indeed good. Let us magnify him today.

‘Our gracious God and Heavenly Father, we magnify your name today. We acknowledge that there is none higher and none greater than You—There is none better, and there is none more worthy. Worthy are you O Lord to receive glory and honor and power. For your pleasure You have made all things and You have made us. You have redeemed for yourself a people, a holy nation, a royal priesthood, by the blood of the Lamb, your only begotten Son; and You have redeemed us. You are righteous in all your ways and just in all You do. Yet in mercy and compassion, You graciously forgive us of our sins and made us your children in Christ your Son. Your thoughts and plans toward us are always for our good even if at times—in the mystery of your wisdom—those involved trials and difficulties.

Thank You for not giving up on us, for as your word says, even when we are faithless, You remain faithful for You cannot deny yourself. That is our comfort and security—that what You revealed to your people thousands of years ago about who You are, remains true even until today. Just as you are David’s shepherd who protected and provided for him, so You do the same for us. In the same way You restored his soul and comforted him through dark valleys, so You do the same for us. And Father, in the same way that David looked forward to living in your presence forever and ever, we too, look forward, after this life is through, to seeing You and dwelling in your house for all eternity. This is our hope and our joy, in Jesus’ name. Amen.’

Scripture Reading

Philippians 4 : 1 – 9 (ESV)

Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
