ORDER OF WORSHIP

Call To Worship

Psalm 98 : 1 – 2

1 Sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation for Him. 2 The Lord has made His salvation known and revealed His righteousness to the nations.

詩篇 98 : 1 – 2

1 你們要向耶和華唱新歌,因為他行過奇妙的事,他的右手和聖臂施行救恩。2 耶和華發明了他的救恩,在列邦人眼前顯出公義。

Worship Through Songs

Good day beloved family of God—bearers of his image and co-heirs of Christ in God.

In all of human history, there is simply no one like our Lord Jesus. Things were never the same since the day Christ came. The world was turned upside down and history itself was split in two—before Christ, and after Christ. Although secularists try to replace B.C. [before Christ] with B.C.E. [before common era]; and A.D. [Anno Domini] with C.E. [common era], Jesus’ coming still leaves its mark in how we reckon our days.

J. Warner Wallace in his book Person of Interest: Why Jesus Still Matters in a World that Rejects the Bible wrote, “The early church leaders knew what they were doing when they divided the calendar into BC and AD. Our current terms fail to explain the reason why human history changed so dramatically. The period BCE is better described as BC (the period “before Christ”), and the years we now refer to as part of the Common Era (CE) are better labeled as AD (Anno Domini, or the “year of our Lord”). While the designations BC and AD may seem like artifacts from the past, they are a far more accurate description of history’s timeline, given that they reference the divine person of interest who divided history.”

As Historian Kenneth Scott Latourette observed, “As the centuries pass, the evidence is accumulating that, measured by His effect on history, Jesus is the most influential life ever lived on this planet.” No other historical figure comes close.

This is akin to what the once great Napoleon Bonaparte realized while in exile during the waning years of his life, when he remarked, “I know men, and I tell you Jesus Christ was not a man. Superficial minds see a resemblance between Christ and the founders of empires and the gods of other religions. That resemblance does not exist. There is between Christianity and other religions the distance of infinity. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne and myself founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon sheer force. Jesus Christ alone founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men will die for Him.”

By the sheer force of divine love, Jesus won over the hearts of multitudes over the millennia. Jesus conquered not by crushing others’ lives but by laying down his own. He vanquished the enemy by allowing the enemy to ‘vanquish’ him.  By willingly facing death, He triumphed over death. By allowing himself to lose, He won for us everlasting gain. As Philippians chapter 2 recounts, Jesus…

‘…gave up his divine privileges;

    he took the humble position of a slave

    and was born as a human being.

When he appeared in human form,

he humbled himself in obedience to God

    and died a criminal’s death on a cross.’

Christ, utterly majestic from all eternity, deliberately lowered himself for the good of the very ones who owed him everything; for those who could never ever pay him back. In love he came to take our blame and ushered heaven’s healing upon our brokenness. Therefore,

‘God elevated him to the place of highest honor

    and gave him the name above all other names,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

    in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord,

    to the glory of God the Father.’

Let us exalt and magnify his Name this day.

‘”More like the Master I would ever be,
More of His meekness, more humility;
More zeal to labor, more courage to be true,
More consecration for work He bids me do.

More like the Master is my daily prayer;
More strength to carry crosses I must bear;
More earnest effort to bring His kingdom in,
More of His Spirit, the wanderer to win.

More like the Master I would live and grow;
More of His love to others I would show;
More self-denial, like His in Galilee,
More like the Master I long to ever be.

Take Thou my heart, I would be Thine alone;
Take Thou my heart and make it all Thine own;
Purge me from sin, O Lord, I now implore,
Wash me and keep me Thine forevermore.”*

For your glory and your Name’s sake, Lord Jesus, amen.’

Scripture Reading

Galatians 5 : 16 – 23

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
