Worship Through Songs

Good day dear Church—citizens of heaven and loyal subjects of the Lord of Hosts.

An unknown author in the early 20th century once penned an insightful description of the incomparable impact of our Lord Jesus Christ on the history of humanity… “More than nineteen hundred years ago there was a man born contrary to the laws of life. This man lived in poverty and was reared in obscurity. He received no formal education and never possessed wealth or wide-spread influence. He never traveled extensively. He only once crossed the boundary of the country in which He lived.

But this man’s life has changed the course of history. In infancy He startled a king; in childhood he puzzled doctors; in man hood He ruled the course of nature, walked upon the waves, and hushed the sea to sleep. He healed the multitudes without medicine and made no charge for His services. He never wrote a book. Yet His life has inspired more books than any other man. He never wrote a song. Yet He has furnished the theme for more songs than all songwriters combined. He never founded a college. But all the schools put together cannot boast of having as many students. He never marshaled an army, nor drafted a soldier, nor fired a gun. Yet no leader ever had more rebels surrender to Him without a shot fired. He never practiced psychiatry. Yet He has healed more broken hearts than all the doctors far and near.

Once each week the wheels of commerce cease their turning, and multitudes gather to pay homage and respect to Him. Though time has spread nineteen hundred years between the people of this generation and His birth, He still lives. His enemies could not destroy Him, and the grave could not hold Him. This man stands forth upon the highest pinnacle of heavenly glory, proclaimed of God, acknowledged by angels, adored by His people, and feared by devils, as the risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Brothers and sisters, may our Lord Jesus Christ be not only the sovereign and center of world history, may He be the lone uncontested ruler of our lives—our greatest delight and our very reason for living. May we abide with him in earnestness and serve him with joy, knowing that we can completely trust his promise that those who lose their lives for his sake and for the sake of his gospel shall surely find it—and find it abundant in him.

“God, thank You for Your forgiveness. Thank You for Your love. Thank You for being a God who takes delight and pleasure. Like a parent, You experience satisfaction when our choices align with Your will. And may Your heart be full of satisfaction and pleasure as You look upon us, Your body of believers.

When the Spirit’s dove descended upon Jesus in the Jordan, You spoke of being well-pleased with Him. You spoke of endearment. You spoke of satisfaction. You spoke with the voice of command and grace mixed into one. And in doing so, You sought to make us know how You felt about Him.

We praise and worship You for giving us the ability to enter into Your pleasure and to cause You to smile through what we do and say.

Heavenly Father, we want to know Your pleasure. We want to hear You say of us that You are “well pleased.” We want to experience the satisfaction of Your satisfaction over us.

Help us see You for who You truly are. Enlighten our hearts and our minds to understand Your emotions more and to take down the guard we sometimes put up between us. Let us come boldly to You in raw feeling and honesty, because that’s what You desire from us. We also want to make You satisfied with the choices we make and the words we speak. Set a seal on our hearts so our hearts’ love goes only to You in worship. In that way, as we draw closer to You in everything we do, feel, think, and say, we enter into a deeper relationship with You.

We love You, Lord, and we pray to You in the name of the Son in whom You are well pleased. Amen.” [adapted from Tony Evans]

Scripture Reading

For Rev. Alvin Rival
Matthew 25 : 14 – 30

14 “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants[a] and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five talents,[b] to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.[c] You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Genesis 39 : 1 – 13

Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had, in house and field. So he left all that he had in Joseph’s charge, and because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate.

Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, because of me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge. He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” 10 And as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her.

11 But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was there in the house, 12 she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house. 13 And as soon as she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled out of the house,
