Worship Through Songs
Good day Church—precious flock of the Lord. May this day find your soul truly at peace—trusting in the greatness and goodness of our God who is our perpetual dwelling place.
King David, for all his failures and weaknesses, was still remarkably labeled by the LORD himself as ‘a man after God’s own heart’. Whatever else could be said of him, his intimate relationship with the LORD God was the single defining reality in his life. He lived in near-constant awareness of God’s presence and is thoroughly convinced of God’s constant awareness of him—as described beautifully in Psalm 139 which says in part,
“O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.”
David’s life was an open book to God—he knows it and he knows God knows it as well. In all manner of circumstance, regardless of what he was facing, David naturally turned to God. In joy or in sorrow, in peace or in strife, in victory or in defeat, he turned to God. Though not perfect, David considered God as the ultimate framework of his life and his greatest good. As he proclaimed in Psalm 16, ‘You are my Lord; I have nothing good besides You.’
And so, in acknowledging his desperate need for the Lord’s deliverance, David declared in Psalm 62,
“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.”
For David, God was not going to make him a fortress into which he can hide from difficulty and danger. God himself is his fortress, his refuge, and his ever-present help in time of trouble. Amid the turmoil, God was his one place of safety. For since his younger days, he has been experiencing first-hand that the LORD is good—that he has compassion on those who revere him as a father has compassion on his own children. So, for him, turning to God is as obvious, common-sensical, and natural as breathing. For, in truth, where else can he turn? Indeed, like David, where else can we turn?
Friends, may we realize, just like David, that there is no better place to be than in the shadow of the Almighty. May we understand in increasing measure that there is no higher good for us—or for anyone else—than God himself. May we seek to live in openness and authenticity before the presence of God who sees and knows all things, and who searches and understands our sometimes-deceitful hearts. And amid our troubles and our struggles, may we not hide our neediness and helplessness, but in humble honesty acknowledge that our only hope, and our only help, comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth—our dwelling place throughout all generations. Our Heavenly Father and our Everlasting God. Let us worship him this day!
‘Eternal God and loving Heavenly Father, we pour out our hearts to you today. Help us not to withhold anything from You since in the first place, nothing in all creation can be hidden from You. You know all things about us, around us and within us. You know our frame and You remember that we are dust. You know our coming and our going; our standing and our sitting; our speaking, as well as our silence. You know every wound in our past; every struggle in our hearts; and every flaw in our character. You know us far better and far deeper than we know ourselves—and yet You love us with an everlasting love. In our weariness and desperation, You gently invite us to come—offering to carry our burdens out of your deep personal care for us in Christ Jesus.
You are not only our God in whom we trust; not only our Father who has compassion on us; but also our dearest friend who, through your abiding Holy Spirit, carries our sorrows and burdens with us along life’s way. How great is your mercy, how wonderful your grace! You demonstrated your love for us in that while we were still sinners, you sent Jesus your Son to die in our place. You bought us with the highest price and given to each one of us a new heart, a new life and a new name written in glory for all eternity. Help us then, out of genuine gratitude and affection, to live our lives for the glory of your name and the delight of your heart. Increase our love for You that in cheerful surrender, we will consider all things a loss compared to knowing You and Jesus Christ your Son—our Savior, our Lord, our King, and our brother. In whose name we pray, amen.’
