Worship Through Songs
Good day dear children of the Living God—beloved forevermore in Jesus Christ.
We were made by God for God—to bear his image; reflect his character; and relate to him in mutual love. This is a crucial part of the Bible’s grand narrative—that our Maker made us not to enslave and exploit us, but to confer to us the dignity of representing him in creation and to engage with us personally in loving relationship.
Here then is one of the most significant differences between the Judeo-Christian tradition and other major religious traditions. For the core Biblical injunction to have no other gods but YHWH and to hold him with not only the highest regard, but a most comprehensive love—i.e., with all our hearts, soul, mind and strength–stands in stark contrast, for example, to Islam’s core tenet of submission to the will of Allah, who is above all, transcendent and nigh inaccessible; or to Buddhism’s central existential aim to detach oneself from any form of desire—good or bad; or to Pantheistic Monism’s [Hinduism] ultimate goal of the self’s dissolution to the World Soul, finally losing all sense of individuality, and with it, any capacity for relationship.
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength’ is the heart and center of all the commandments, and the only motivation for living that is satisfying enough to our Father’s heart. This is how Jesus loves his Heavenly Father. And by Christ’s constant intercession; the grace of God the Father; and the Holy Spirit’s transforming presence in our lives, we can—slowly but surely—do the same.
‘Dear Lord Jesus—Precious Savior and Dearest Friend,
How humbling and confounding is the thought of your sacrificial love towards us. We, who have nothing to offer You but brokenness and strife, have become the objects of your unrelenting compassion and tender affection. You gave your life that we might live; and exchanged your pristine righteousness for our utter corruption. Truly, You demonstrated your love for us in that while we were yet sinners, you died for us.
We only have the faintest idea of the depth, the height, the breadth, and the length of your love for us, and yet we do not have to completely understand it in order to delight in it. Your love, and all that it entails—as revealed in your word— grants us both the freedom from the past; and the security in the present, to face the uncertainties of the future–as we are anchored to that unshakable tenet of our faith: that You, O Lord do not change. You remain the same yesterday, today and forever. And thus, we can rest. And thus, we have hope. And thus, we can face tomorrow.
We praise You and worship You for all that You are and all that You have done. Without You, nothing matters—not our possessions; not our positions; not our pursuits; not our pleasures; and not even our own persons. For all things, including our very lives, are made for your pleasure and for your honor alone.
Help us therefore, in all things, to please You and honor You as we should—not out of anxious obligation towards a capricious and vindictive deity—a thought blatantly false and unworthy of You–but out of grateful affection for the One who loved us and gave himself for us.
For your Name’s sake, amen.’
