Call To Worship
Psalm 111: 1 – 5
1 Praise the Lord. I will extol the Lord with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. 2 Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them. 3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and compassionate. 5 He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.
Worship Through Songs
Good day people of the Lord, children of the Living God and subjects of his Supreme Majesty, King Jesus. May we live increasingly in passionate pursuit of our glorious purpose—to know Him and to make Him known to the ends of the earth.
The story of the Bible is not merely religious history, it is the story of the whole world. So contends Michael Goheen in his book The True Story of the Whole World. He writes, “Christians … believe that there is one true story: the story told in the Bible. It begins with God’s creation and human rebellion and runs through the history of Israel to Jesus and on through the church, moving to the final coming of the kingdom of God. At the very center of this story is the man Jesus of Nazareth, in whom God has fully revealed and accomplished his purpose for the entire world. This story alone gives true meaning to all of human history and to every culture—and thus meaning to your life and mine.”
At the heart of this grand story is the God-incarnate himself, Jesus Christ, who came to atone for the sins of the world; to reverse the curse on fallen creation; and to demolish the works of the enemy. He came to conquer sin and death and purchase for himself a people from every tribe and tongue and people and nation—reconciling sinful man with a Holy God through his blood.
And since we, who have experienced this reconciliation with God, are called and empowered by Christ to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth, we take on this lofty task with joyful resolve. For as necessary an endeavor missions might be, it is but a means to a much grander end. As John Piper remarked in his book Let the Nations be Glad, “Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exists because worship doesn’t. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man. When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity. But worship abides forever.”
The prophet Isaiah experienced a glimpse of this eternal worship around God’s throne when he “…saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: with two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:
‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.’”
In the New Testament, John, the writer of Revelation—who witnessed in the flesh God’s ultimate revelation in his Son, Jesus Christ—was also offered a glorious preview of heaven’s rapturous adulation of the Godhead. This time, of the God Incarnate, heaven’s Spotless Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world—when he, “… looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying:
‘Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honour and glory and praise!’”
He continued, “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:
‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honour and glory and power, for ever and ever!’”
Considering all this, may we, in Christ, give to God the worship that He is due. May we not shrink back, shy away, nor suppress the love; the honor; and the adoration that He deserves. May we worship him—the One True God and our Good and Generous Father—genuinely, passionately, and consistently, even as we endeavor to bring others–from across the world or across the street—to do the same.
‘Dear God of Grace and Glory; our Merciful and Generous Father,
Grant us a heart that delights supremely in You. That we may worship You not only in Spirit and in Truth, but in a disposition of genuine joy. May each of our hearts find its rest in You, yet at the same time burn with passion for your Name to be magnified among all the tongues, tribes, people, and nations across the earth. As we go where You bid us go and do what You bid us do, we eagerly look forward to that glorious day when we shall meet You face to face in Jesus Christ—In whose Name we live and pray, amen.’
