Worship Through Songs
Good day precious flock of God. Happy Sunday School Sunday. May God grant us the grace to live in such a way that the legacy we leave behind will lead these young souls to fear and love the Lord with their all.
In the second and third chapters of Revelation, we find Christ’s message to the seven churches. Each address follows a recurring pattern with similar parts such as descriptions of the sender; commendations and admonitions for the recipients; and promises of rewards for the victorious. This last part repeatedly begins with the description, ‘to him who overcomes’ and highlights the fact that not only is it possible to overcome, but it is extremely worthwhile as well. For the One who stands among the golden lampstands and presides over the seven churches, will not leave unrewarded the one who perseveres. And these promises were not only given to the original receivers of the messages, but to every follower of Christ across the ages.
As Ranko Stefanovic in his book, Revelation, observes… “…the messages to the seven churches contain valuable lessons that apply to Christians in all time periods…These messages were not sent separately but together in one letter (Revelation 1:11). The entire letter was to be read by all the churches. Since each message concludes with an exhortation to heed what the Spirit says to the churches, each message applies to all the churches, although each was written to an individual church. These messages, thus, speak to all Christians and can generally represent different types of Christians in certain periods of history or in different locations.”
Mitchell G. Reddish, in his commentary on Revelation, concurs that … “Although these messages have specific warnings and commendations for each congregation, they are in actuality circular pronouncements for all the churches… The warnings to one congregation would then become warnings to all the congregations. Likewise, the commendations, when appropriate, became universal commendations. As modern readers of these messages, we interact with the text in a similar manner, being challenged and corrected by the warnings and exhortations and finding comfort in the words of praise.”
So the warnings, challenges and exhortations to the churches are also for us today. The promised rewards for those who overcome still apply, and the call to persevere still stands. And so, just as the great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us have done, we too shall continue ‘fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy that was set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.’ [Hebrews 12:2]
For Christ is not only the atonement for sin, but He is also our very power for living. He is the God who gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. He not only carries the weight of our burdens, He carries us. And his power and presence in our lives bring peace amid our troubles; joy amid our sufferings; and victory amid our battles. Hallelujah, what a Savior! Let us declare his victory today!
‘Precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Our dearest friend and highest King.
You are like no other.
You mean everything to us.
Abide with us.
Fill us.
Change us and make us more like You.
Pure like You. Kind like You. Strong like You.
By the power of your Spirit.
To the glory of the Father.
For the sake of your name.
Amen.’

Scripture Reading
Revelation 2 : 12 – 17
12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.
13 “‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. 15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’
