Worship Through Songs

What does it mean to live by faith and not by sight? To set our hearts on things above and not things on earth? To believe and to trust Jesus Christ even though we have not seen nor touched him?

Is it merely mental assent to a set of propositions and doctrinal statements? Is it merely a stubbornness of conviction—or opinion—in the apparent scarcity of empirical evidence?  Is it merely a loyal adherence to beliefs and traditions handed down from generations past?

Hebrews 11 describes faith this way… “Faith is the assurance of things you have hoped for, the absolute conviction that there are realities you’ve never seen.” [Hebrews 11 VOICE]

The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd …  It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.” [Hebrews 11 MSG]

Tony Merida, in Exalting Jesus in Ephesians, writes … “Faith is the instrument by which we lay hold of Christ. But faith is not a work. It is a gift. Notice what Paul says: “It is God’s gift” (v. 8); “it” includes “faith.” The grammar indicates that the whole of salvation is to be viewed as a gift. Grace is a gift. Faith is a gift. Salvation is a gift. We should never think of salvation as a transaction in which God provides grace and we provide faith … No. It is all grace. We were dead and had to be awakened to believe.”

            Indeed, faith is a gift—and a most necessary one. For it is God himself who opens blind eyes, softens hearts of stone, and dispenses the truth that sets free—giving us the confidence and the assurance of things eternal and unseen, as He too is eternal and unseen.  By faith we see God’s power in creation; his grace in salvation; his love and truth in Jesus Christ our Lord—in whom is life incorruptible, everlasting, and true.

‘“Author of Faith, Eternal Word,
Whose Spirit breathes the active flame;
Faith, like its Finisher and Lord,
Today as yesterday the same:

To Thee our humble hearts aspire,
And ask the gift unspeakable:
Increase in us the kindled fire,
In us the work of faith fulfill.

By faith we know Thee strong to save:
Save us, a present Saviour Thou!
Whate’er we hope, by faith we have,
Future and past subsisting now.

To him that in Thy name believes,
Eternal life with Thee is given;
Into himself he all receives,
Pardon, and happiness, and heaven.

The things unknown to feeble sense,
Unseen by reason’s glimmering ray,
With strong, commanding evidence
Their heavenly origin display.

Faith lends its realizing light,
The clouds disperse, the shadows fly,
The Invisible appears in sight,
And God is seen by mortal eye.”*

Until that day dear Father, steady us along the way and grant us the faith and the strength; the joy and the hope, to run our course and finish our race, for your glory and pleasure in Jesus Christ, Amen.’ * [John and Charles Wesley]

Hebrews 11 : 1 – 2

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation.

希 伯 來 書 11 : 1 – 2
