Worship Through Songs

Good day brothers and sisters in Christ. May we rise to face the day with the light of God in our eyes, his love in our hearts and his praise on our lips.

The primary patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick who lived in the 5th century AD, was kidnapped in his teens from his home in Roman Britain to slavery by Irish raiders. He eventually escaped and returned home, was educated, and trained as a priest. He went back to Ireland as a missionary to convert the peoples of the island to Christianity, including the ones who held him captive. He is known as the ‘Apostle of Ireland’ and is a major contributor to the spread of Christianity there. Irish people today still celebrate St. Patrick’s Day every March 17 in remembrance of the day he died. Tradition attributed a famous prayer called St. Patrick’s Breastplate to him, part of which says…

I arise today, through
God’s strength to pilot me,
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s shield to protect me,
God’s host to save me
From snares of devils,
From temptation of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
afar and near.

Such were the conditions of that time, that the constant perils that confronted this man of God, as he strove to make Christ known to a hostile people in a rugged land, drove him to daily recognize his complete vulnerability and insufficiency apart from God. Looking to God alone for protection, direction, wisdom, and strength, he rose to face whatever the day might bring in Jesus’ name. We know this, for near the end of the prayer, we find the words…

Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

…affirming a fact that all of us, Christ-followers, should constantly take to heart:  that without Christ, we could do nothing—that everything is from him, through him, and for him. Christ in every thought and in every heartbeat. Christ in every breath and in every step. Christ in the light of the morning and in the quiet of the night. Christ beside tranquil waters and amid stormy seas. Christ in the pinnacle of life and in the valley of death.

May Christ’s presence so fill us, and his love so overwhelm us, that our lives may radiate his very life—and in doing so, lead others to him—just as Patrick sought to do.  And like the Apostle Paul, may we come to the place where we can genuinely declare that ‘I no longer live, but Christ lives in me’—then in his name and in his power, rise to do the will of God our Father, in our own little corner of the world. Let us exalt our Lord and Savior this day.

‘Precious Lord and King; Wonderful Savior; Dearest Jesus. We magnify and exalt You today. We marvel at your gift of salvation and your incomparable display of grace on the cross. You took our sin and shame and bought us at the highest cost. You endured the cross, rose from the dead and won the victory. You brought us from darkness into your Kingdom of Light—and You brought us, from the dominion of death, into everlasting life. Yours is the power, the honor, and the glory forevermore—for You are worthy beyond compare and magnificent beyond description. You have loved us at our worst and by grace, forgave, cleansed, and accepted us. You have treated us kindly and shown us mercy when practically no one else would.  It is your kindness that led, and continues to lead, us to repentance; your love that causes us to love; and your grace that enables us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow You. For by your finished work, we are yours, set apart for You, now and always, for the glory of God our Father. In Your Name, Amen.’

Scripture Reading

Romans 12 : 1 – 2 (ESV)

1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
