Good day children of the Living God, beloved of the Lord. May this day find you rejoicing in our blood-bought freedom in Christ Jesus—freedom from sin, condemnation, and death; freedom to delight in God our Father; and freedom to live lives delightful to him.
In a world obsessed with seeking satisfaction for every possible whim and desire, and is filled with people pursuing the empty promises of the counterfeit gods of money, pleasure, accomplishments and fame, Augustine of Hippo’s declaration that ‘man is restless until he finds his rest in God’, is a somber but liberating reminder that we can never be truly complete nor truly happy apart from God. It means that we were created to have a relationship with God. A relationship that is both right and intimate. Right in the sense that God is treated as God—worthy of our deepest devotion, our highest allegiance, and our humble obedience. Intimate in the sense that we, because of the New Covenant in the blood of Jesus, engage with him as our Abba Father, our constant Companion, and our dearest Friend.
As people run to and fro looking for that ‘ultimate’ prize to fill the emptiness within, we, the blood-bought, Spirit-sealed children of the Living God, have this solemn yet delightful privilege of pointing them to Jesus, who alone can fill the ‘God-shaped’ hole in every heart. He is the Bread of Life that satisfies the deepest hunger of our hearts and the Living Water that quenches the life-thirst of our souls. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and He is the well that never runs dry. The longer we walk with him and serve him, the more we understand what the Psalmist meant when we declared, ‘I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”’ Let us then turn to him today and ask him to fill our hearts with his love and our lives with his transforming presence that once again our mourning will turn to dancing, and our grief to joy—for He is the life-giving, life-changing and life-filling God. Let us worship him this day.
‘O Great God and Heavenly Father. We humble ourselves once more before You. At the same time, we find our rest in knowing You have forgiven and accepted us in Jesus Christ. We come in the confidence that You do not change and therefore keep your Word to the very end. What You say, you will do, and thus if every promise in your Word is fulfilled, and stay fulfilled in Christ Jesus, then we, who by faith, and by the new birth belong to him, are of all people, most blessed. What more could we ask for? What reason is there to fret? If You are for us, and are working all things for our good, what then is there to fear? Yet Father, You know that many times we are indeed fearful, anxious and uncertain. You know that at times, in moments of weakness, we fail to keep our eyes on You. In moments of forgetfulness, our problems begin to look bigger than You. And like Peter walking on the waves, we see the billows rushing toward us, and our hearts begin to sink, and so do our feet. And like Peter, all we could do is cry out to You, ‘LORD, SAVE ME!’ And YOU DO—time and time again, trial after trial, storm after storm. You are the God who saves. You are our help, our shield, and our deliverer. Cause us to fix our eyes on You. Cause us to seek more of You in our lives. Cause us to yearn for You—more than the deer thirsting for water in the desert, or the watchman on the city walls waiting for the light of the dawn. Fill us with more and more of You so that the glimmer and luster of this world will grow evermore dim, and we see only You. We ask this in Christ’s Name, amen.”
